LEXINGTON, Ky. — One man died and almost a dozen others were taken to a hospital after a gas leak at an apartment complex Monday in Lexington.

The Lexington Fire Department responded to a call around 4 a.m. for an unconscious person at Oxford Circle Apartments. When fire officials arrived, they found high levels of carbon monoxide, flammable gas and methane at the complex off Versailles Road.

The apartment’s residents were evacuated, the fire department said, and more than 30 units were forcibly opened to be ventilated.

On Tuesday morning the Fayette County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 62-year-old Samuel Gross, of Lexington. His cause and manner of death are under investigation.

The cause of the leak is still under investigation. At least nine people were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The fire department responded to a call earlier Monday around 2 a.m. at the same apartment building but treated the patient outside and could not detect a gas leak, according to LEX18.

The station also reports officials said they’ve contacted Lexington Emergency Management and the Red Cross to make a plan for those who were evacuated from the building.
